A veteran parliamentarian and former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma passed away on 4th March 2016. He was 68. The former Meghalaya chief minister was one of the widely respected political leaders of the country. In his long political career he also unsuccessfully contested the presidential election as an opposition candidate against Pranab Mukherjee. A man of masses he will always remembered for his notable contribution in the parliamentary democracy.
Purno Agitok Sangma was born on September 1, 1947 in a small tribal village Chapahati of West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya. He completed his graduation from St Anthony’s College and later went to Dibrugarh University in Assam for his Masters degree in International Relations. He also had a degree in Law. He struggled hard to rise in life. He is survived by his daughter Agatha Sangma and son Conrad Sangma.
Political Life
PA Sangma made forays into the political arena in 1973 by becoming Vice-President of the Pradesh Youth Congress in Meghalaya. He later served as General Secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee of Meghalaya from 1975 to 1980. He was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times i.e. 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Lok Sabha. He represented Tura (ST) constituency in Lok Sabha. In his long illustrious career he served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990. He earned admiration as a Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998. A long-time member of Congress Party , he alongwith Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar was expelled from the party for raising a banner of revolt against Sonia Gandhi over her foreign origin issue. Subsequently, the trio formed the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Due to differences with NCP chief Sharad Pawar over his Presidential candidature, he resigned from all posts of NCP. Sangma lost to Pranab Mukherjee for the post of the President in the results declared on 23 July 2012.
Illness and Death
Sangma died of a heart attack at his Delhi residence.
